Producer and multi-instrumentalist TEKA (LowLow Records) is back with a new release, nearly a year after dropping the full-length LP with Cali P, "Vizion." For the new single "Stand Up," he invited Cali and Berlin-based rapper JuJu Rogers into his studio in Kreuzberg. "My tracks bring the worlds of reggae and hip-hop together, like Cali and JuJu do in their music," TEKA says, "so to work with the both of them came naturally."
JuJu's no stranger to mixing worlds, with roots in both New Orleans and Germany and a sound honed over decades that incorporates everything from rebellious reggae vibes to Marvin Gaye's seductive swagger. "It was an honor to work with them," he says, "I've been following their musical journey for years."
In the session for "Stand Up," all three artists felt a vibe in the studio set off like the ignition of strike matches.
Cali P: "When TEKA dropped the track [JuJu and I]just looked at each other and knew what had to happen. There wasn't really a discussion, the idea was right in front of us. With Juju, I wanted to make a track that has a strong revolutionary message. "Stand Up" is about the power of collective action in society, and the courage to speak out against injustice."
With "Stand Up," TEKA, Cali P and JuJu Rogers craft a banger anthem that expresses their deepest wishes for us all to be free, rebellious spirits in the face of oppression worldwide.
